A New Nuclear Rocket Technology Takes Another Step Forward

Nuclear Thermal Propulsion has long been the wild card of space travel—too hot to handle, too promising to ignore. With chemical rockets maxing out their efficiency and ion thrusters offering high impulse but low thrust, NTP offers a middle path with serious firepower. Now, researchers at UAH and Ohio State are pushing the envelope with a wild new twist: the Centrifugal Nuclear Thermal Rocket, or CNTR, which ditches solid fuel for spinning molten uranium and aims to nearly double traditional NTP performance. The catch? Ten brutal engineering hurdles, from uranium vaporization to high-temp material survival. It’s a high-stakes game of nuclear roulette, and the latest paper in Acta Astronautica shows they’re inching closer to lighting the match. Full story here.
